1. General information
The subject is an introduction to the central problems of knowledge, combining the historical perspective with the systematic one. The main philosophical theories and perspectives of knowledge, the epistemological reflections of relevant authors, and the central debates and arguments of the discipline are presented , understanding their relationship with other philosophical disciplines and acquiring a specialized vocabulary. This approach aligns with the following Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda: Goal 4: Quality education; Goal 5: Gender equality; Goal 10: Reducing Inequalities; Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities; Goal 12: Responsible Production and Consumption; Goal 13: Climate Action: Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
2. Learning results
It reflects what students are expected to know, understand and/or be able to do at the end of the subject. It should coincide with what is indicated in the Verification Report.
1. Construct and critique arguments and evaluate their relative strength or weakness.
2. Knowledge to understand the fundamental concepts and theories of contemporary theory of knowledge.
3. Critically evaluate the problems raised by contemporary science.
4. Operate with the strategies of scientific methodology.
5. Read and interpret incisively classical and contemporary epistemological texts.
3. Syllabus
Introduction: What is the theory of knowledge?
Module 1. On theory of knowledge:
1.1. What is knowledge, in philosophical perspective.
1.2. The problem of belief.
1.3. The problem of justification.
1.4- The problem of truth.
1.5. The naturalistic temptation on knowledge.
1.6. Roots of knowledge: experience, perception and feeling.
Module 1. For a phenomenology of knowledge:
2.1. Fundamental concepts of phenomenology.
2.2. Problems and perspectives of a phenomenology of knowledge.
2.3. Phenomenological analysis of knowledge.
Appendix: Epistemology, phenomenology and hermeneutics.
4. Academic activities
The methodology of the subject is active, diversified and personalized, concretized in the following activities: 1. The teacher's presentation of the subject, especially in module 1, based on theoretical lectures, preparatory readings and in-depth study with various bibliographical references.
2. Active participation of students in all activities, especially following a seminar model of study of problems and texts in module 2.
3. Discussion and dialogue among students, and between students and teacher in all activities.
4. Autonomous reading and research work by the students.
5. Assessment system
First call
a) Continuous assessment system
The evaluation consists of two activities: a final written test of the contents corresponding to module 1 of the program , whose grade will correspond to 60% of the final grade; and a seminar of study of texts, of the contents corresponding to module 2, whose grade will correspond to 40% of the final grade
b) Final assessment
The evaluation consists of a single final written test of the contents corresponding to modules 1 and 2 of the program.
Second call
a)Global assessment test
The evaluation consists of a single final written test of the contents corresponding to modules 1 and 2 of the program.
Assessment criteria:
1. Level of understanding of the problems addressed and precision in their treatment.
2. Development of the ability to establish conceptual relationships between the different approaches being studied.
3. Quality in the argumentation and conceptual foundation based on the proposed reading texts.
4. Clarity of exposition and rigor in the writing of written activities.
5. Depth and originality in the reflections on the subject.
